Kenyan rapper Volvexzshawa is closing out 2024 on a high note, reflecting on a year that saw him release his debut album, Big Boys Do Cry.
The album, a deeply personal project, explores themes of grief and resilience, particularly from the perspective of the Gen Z generation. It’s a heartfelt body of work inspired by his own journey of coping with the loss of his father during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The album is a reflection of how our generation handles life’s challenges, especially grief,” Volvexzshawa shares. In the opening track, Intro, he pays homage to his late father with poignant lyrics: ‘The whole world love language is hat-treat, the whole world will wait till you’re dead to send you bouquet of flowers.’
He further adds, “Me and my Papa were like twins; I still got the toys we used to play with. Mama’s still trying to be the boss of the house, and my sister just got a new job—that’s what’s up.”
These raw, emotional reflections struck a chord with listeners, earning the album recognition on platforms like Ngoma Charts, where one of its tracks was featured as Song of the Week.
