27-year-old chicken seller cry for justice after being shot by police

A trader is seeking justice after he was allegedly shot and injured by a policeman at Makutano, in Baringo County.

Police claim that Jackson Ondiek, 27, is a suspected thief who defied the dusk-to-dawn curfew on June 7, 2020 when he defied orders to stop when police caught up with him.

But speaking from his hospital bed at the Eldama Ravine Hospital where he is nursing gunshot wounds and with a bullet still lodged in his right leg, Ondiek said he is an innocent chicken seller who was going home at the time of the incident.

"I sell kienyeji chicken and eggs. I have a chicken farm in Mumberes village in Eldama Ravine. On that day I had just finished my business and was on my way home when I met the police. It was past the curfew hour, but I obeyed and stopped when asked to do so," he said.

"I spend my days at Kamara area which is approximately 10 kilometres from my home. That day I couldn't get transport back home, so I decided to walk."

However, Baringo Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa dismissed the allegations, saying Ondiek was a suspect in a theft case. He is also being accused of trying to attack police officers with a panga when he was being arrested.
