Hon. Falhada Iman, an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP and her National Assembly counterpart Umulkher Harun have apologised for their conduct.
In a statement, Falhada addressed the altercation that had unfolded yesterday at the Parliament precincts where they clashed in a physical confrontation.
The incident, captured on video and widely shared online, showed the two lawmakers wrestling on the ground, their voices sharp with insults, as a female colleague desperately tried to pull them apart, calling for help from other legislators who watched from a distance.
Falhada, began her apology by acknowledging the gravity of the moment.
She felt compelled, she said, to speak on the regrettable incident that had transpired in the parliamentary corridor, a space meant to uphold the dignity of the institution they served.
The altercation, she admitted, was a betrayal of the trust the Kenyan people had placed in them, a lapse that cast a shadow over their collective duty to lead with integrity.
"For this, I offer my unreserved apologies," she declared, her words carrying the weight of accountability.
The tension, she revealed, had been fueled by prolonged and intense provocation, with inflammatory remarks testing her restraint.
Though she had initially held back, the situation spiraled beyond control, and in the heat of the moment, her response crossed the line of decorum expected of a public servant.
"In the heat of the moment, my response crossed the line of decorum expected of a public servant. Let me be unequivocal: no circumstance justifies such a breach of conduct, and I take full accountability for my actions," she said.
To her parliamentary colleagues, she expressed deep regret for tainting their shared commitment to mutual respect and service to the nation.
To the Kenyan public, who had witnessed the unsettling spectacle, she apologized for failing to embody the composure and maturity they deserved from their leaders.
"Disagreements, no matter how impassioned, must be navigated with grace, dialogue, and adherence to protocol," she said.
Her apology comes hours later after her colleague Umulkher Harun earlier issued a statement expressing deep regret over the incident while emphasizing her commitment to maintaining decorum as a leader and a Muslim woman.
"Today an unfortunate incident occurred on the parliamentary grounds a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother," she wrote.
"I sincerely regret this occurrence and want to emphasise that I do not endorse or encourage any form of misconduct," read the statement in part.
She further accused Iman of orchestrating the attack due to their ongoing differences but refrained from further comment, instead pledging to uphold the "respectful and dignified standards expected of our institution and of myself."
