When Chiki Kuruka took on the role of managing her husband, Bien-Aime Baraza, many doubted her. Critics questioned her ability, some dismissing her as just "the wife" and predicting the move would end in disaster.

But Chiki ignored the noise. Now, as Bien celebrates his win as Best Artist in Eastern Africa at the Trace Awards, her belief in his journey and her role in it has been validated.

Reflecting on the backlash she faced, Chiki shared an emotional Instagram post. "I took on your management when the nation's sweethearts went on hiatus. I remember so many blogs saying things like 'what would she know,' 'wives should be left out of these things,' 'they will break up for sure now.'"

Despite the scepticism, she remained focused. "Through it all, we ignored the noise. Looked forward. Held hands, and focused."

Chiki's faith in Bien has been unwavering, and with his latest win, her efforts have paid off. Bien took a moment to appreciate her role in his journey, calling her his "walking stick in all the unsure moments." He also thanked Team Bien, his collaborators, Trace Eastern Africa, and his fans.

The win was a significant achievement. As the only Kenyan nominee in his category, Bien triumphed over Tanzanian stars Diamond, Harmonize, Marioo, Zuchu, and Nandy, Ethiopian artist Rophnan, and Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka.

Bien also delivered a powerful performance of his hit song Nairobi alongside Marioo, a track that remains YouTube Kenya's number-one video.

For Chiki, the journey has been about more than just proving herself-it has been about redefining what support looks like.

Earlier this year, she challenged the notion that Kenyans don't support each other, sharing, "What I have learned since managing Bien is very often support and a helping hand come where you least expect it."

Marking her first anniversary as Bien's manager on April 30, 2024, she reflected, "I've learned that some people will underestimate you no matter what you do, whilst others will see more value in you than you even see in yourself."

Her dedication has proven the doubters wrong. As Bien's solo career continues to soar, Chiki's role in shaping his success is undeniable.

And with an album on the way, this is just the beginning.
