Hi Chris,

I’m looking for love on the net because I’m always online! But I’m having trouble separating the good guys from the time-wasters. How can I improve my hit rate?

Online Woes

Chris says,

Hi Online Woes!

Online dating can be tricky. For example, dating sites use ‘bots’ to make it look like you’re getting lots of hits on your free profile. But once you’ve paid for a subscription, all those hits mysteriously dry up.

Online criminals also target you with attractive profiles and photos. They’re not real, of course, and as soon as you get close, they start asking for money. So if you’re looking for love online, be as wary as you would be on the street, and ditch anyone whose conversation turns financial.

Many inadequate guys will also inundate you with lame chat lines. So when you’re online, get over the idea that men have to make the first move.

Even though women send far fewer first messages than men, far more of their first messages turn into dates. That’s because both men and women tend to approach online partners who are more attractive than themselves.

So if you send a first message, you’ll hear from the most attractive men, and they’re more likely to ask you out. On the other hand, if you wait for men to approach you, you’ll mostly hear from unattractive men. And find yourself turning them down.

This may sound completely crazy, but it’s exactly what happens in real life. Guys who hit on every girl there will be rejected by most of them. But the ones who only hit on girls who are interested in them have a great time.

You also need to be yourself when you’re dating online. You won’t connect with your real-life date if you differ from your online persona.

In fact, don’t do anything online that you wouldn’t do in person. Instead, use the internet wisely and treat it as an extension of your personality. Then you’re sure to find love online.

All the best,

Chris
