Why won't any of my boyfriends commit? (Photo: iStock)

Hi Chris!

All my boyfriends have either mistreated me or just won’t commit. Don’t men like women anymore? Don’t they want to get married?

No Good Men

Hi, No Good Men!

Actually, plenty of men like women and want to get married. But some don’t. So your job is to sort them out!

You must also ensure that a new boyfriend knows from the start that you want fidelity and commitment. Don’t waste time in dead-end relationships. The moment you start to wonder, break it off.

Start by only dating men who are in the right age range. Too young and they’ll enjoy the single life too much. Still single at 35? They’ll be confirmed bachelors. Men who like their independence too much, coming and going as they please.

Most men want to have a wife and be faithful to her. But others don’t like women very much and just use and discard them. If you think you’re with one of them, move on immediately.

Some men are slow to move on. Others have been hurt in previous relationships. Or a divorce. Investing your time in one of them is definitely worthwhile. But a man who still lives with his parents is much less likely to commit.

Does your new man have married friends? Then he’s more likely to take you seriously. And you should never date a married man!

Do you get the picture? You need to decide quickly whether the new guy you’ve just met falls into one of the high-risk ‘no commitment’ categories. If he does, don’t waste your time with him!

But if he looks like a good bet, then spend a year or so getting to know him really well. Then, if you’re still happy, make sure he knows you want him to marry you. A lot of relationships fail because the guy doesn’t know that’s what his girlfriend wants. So make sure your boyfriend is sure you’re going to say yes!

All the best,

Chris
