Makenzi's trial stalls due to prosecutors' lack of travel funds

Controversial preacher Paul Makenzi appeared for his trial at Tononko Children's Court Monday in a jovial mood and dispelled rumours that he was dead, as his trial seemed to have stalled.

Last week, while seeking an adjournment, the prosecution informed Tononko Principal Magistrate Nelly Chepchirchir that they were cash-strapped and could not support their lead prosecutors for a five-day hearing.

On Saturday, social media was abuzz with rumours that the preacher, allegedly responsible for the deaths of 367 people in Shakahola, had died.

Makenzi stated that the rush to prosecute him had stalled because to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was facing a financial crisis.

Yesterday, Makenzi, through his lawyer Lawrence Obonyo, confirmed he was in good health and ready to defend himself against charges of murder, manslaughter, radicalisation, and child kidnapping and torture.

Speaking to The Standard outside Tononko Children's Court, Obonyo expressed concern over the rumours surrounding Makenzi.

"We are saddened by these malicious rumours. We suspect someone has ill intentions towards Makenzi. He is alive, in good health, and determined to clear his name against all the charges,'' said Obonyo.

"We want to know the truth in all these cases Makenzi is facing. Consider the families of the victims and Makenzi's family. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty."
