Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta will join three other African presidents in a panel discussion in Equatorial Guinea on the deadly Ebola disease that has ravaged parts of West Africa.
He will be joined by the host President Nguema Mbasogo, Thomas Boni Yayi (Benin) and Paul Kagame (Rwanda). The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Director General Irina Bokova will also join the three presidents during a Scientific Round Table in Malabo, focusing on positioning science in Africa for socio-economic development.
The major issues to be discussed include the impact and status of the Ebola epidemic, HIV/Aids and challenges in the management of the diseases.
President Kenyatta will also attend the award ceremony for the 2014 UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea international prize for research in the life sciences. The Prize seeks to reward projects and activities of individuals, institutions, other entities or non-governmental organisations for scientific research in life sciences with a view to improving the quality of human life.
The ceremony will also be complemented by the Scientific Round Table which will set the stage for development of science in Africa.
BILATERAL TALKS
President Kenyatta arrived in Malabo on Sunday evening for a two-day official visit. During the visit, the President will champion research in life sciences as well as cement bilateral relations with the Central African country.
President Kenyatta will hold bilateral talks with his host on areas of interest between Kenya and Equatorial Guinea. Trade and knowledge-sharing in oil and gas are among the key issues that the two leaders will discuss.
The plane carrying the President and his delegation touched down at Malabo International Airport shortly after 5.00 pm local time on Sunday.
On arrival, the President was received by his host, President Nguema Mbasogo. Thereafter, he inspected a guard of honour mounted by a detachment of the Equatorial Guinea Defence Forces before being entertained by a group of dancers.
