Police in Mombasa have launched investigations into the mysterious death of a university student.
Some reports indicate the deceased fell from the balcony where he was making a phone call in an apparent drunken stupor.
The deceased Edwin Kibet, 29, Technical University of Mombasa student is alleged to have fallen from a balcony in Mshomoroni, Mwisho wa lami area in Kisauni estate of Mombasa and died.
Kisauni police chief Julius Kiragu told The Standard the third year clinical medicine student fell from fourth floor but was trapped on the first floor where he was hit by metal grills sustaining serious injuring on his body parts.
Eyewitnesses told police the deceased who have been staying with his guardian Rashid Kibet excused himself at around 3 am and climb to the fourth floor where he received a phone call.
‘’We have been told that the deceased fell from the fourth floor and hanged at the first floor, the blood was oozing from nose and his eyes,’’ said police chief.
Another police source told the standard the student was drunk and he came home at the wee hours staggering.
Mr Kiragu said the student was rushed to Jocham hospital for treatment but he was pronounced dead on arrival adding that the blood was oozing from nose and his eyes.
He noted that a postmortem examination will be done as part of a police investigation that has been launched.
Last year a fourth year law student at the University of Nairobi campus in Mombasa died in the same area in near similar conditions. He was lynched by a hungry mob who mistook them for thieves.
Samuel Odemba and his cousin, who were lynched by the mob in Mtopanga in Mombasa on Monday October 17 last year after they were mistaken for thieves. They were returning from a drinking spree and mistakenly, tried to ride on a motorcycle resembling theirs. The killers have never been arrested for the murders that were watched by thousands on site and on the internet.
