New champs Chavakali clinch basketball title

Chavakali beat archrivals Vihiga High 85-45 to lift the Vihiga district schools basketball title at Eregi Teachers College at the weekend.

At the same time, schools from Nyanza province have converged at Maseno School for the secondary schools first term ‘A’ ballgames. Chavakali were too good for Vihiga, with Teddy Kakai, Lindi Lwane and Kevin Otako doing the damage.

Kakai scored 25 points for the winners while Jacob Limo and Robert Odhiambo netted 16 and 14 points for Vihiga. In the semi-finals, Chavakali beat Busali Union 85-11 while Vihiga edged out Mbale 81-40.

In the girls’ category, Moi Girls Vokoli beat hard-fighting Mudavadi, Madzuu 16-14 in a see-saw final match to win the title. In other matches, Vokoli beat Kegoye 38-13 while Madzuu beat Kegoye 41-10.

Won all matches

In hockey matches played on round robin basis, Vokoli won the title after winning all their matches. They beat Madira 6-0 before edging out Madzuu 2-1. Madira went down 6-0 to Madzuu. In the boys’ category, Chavakali won all their matches to claim the title.

They thrashed Mbale 11-0 before beating Vihiga by a solitary goal. Vihiga recovered to beat Mbale 3-1. In the rugby Seven-a-side played on league basis, hosts Chavakali won the title after defeating all their opponents.

They beat bitter rivals Vihiga 19-10 before defeating Mbale 29-5. They went ahead to whip Kegoye 63- 0, Gahumbwa 75-0 and Friends School Kigama 67-0.

The winners will represent the district during Provincial championship slated for March 19 to 22 at Kakamega, Musingu, and Mukumu High schools and Police canteen Grounds.

Athletics giants

In Nyanza, hockey defending champions Kisumu Day will lead the Kisumu West district teams alongside Kisumu Girls.

Kisumu Boys and Kisumu Girls will be among the teams to feature in basketball competitions. Schools from 22 districts will be competing for titles during the championship.

Meanwhile, athletics giants Sing’ore Girls swept the first four places to collect maximum points during this year’s Keiyo district secondary schools cross-country championship at the weekend.

Naomi Kipkemoi led her schoolmates in sweeping the first four places after clocking 21:31.4 during the championship held at Iten location field.

Hyvine Kiyeng, Benadate Cheruiyot and Joan Jepkoech came second, third and fourth in 21:43.8, 22.05.1 and 22:07.5 to steer the school, renowned for churning out big talents every year, to first position with 10 points.

Sing’ore’s Antonina Kwambai came back in 22:21.3 to emerge sixth. The school dominated the district team that will represent the area during the North Rift Championship this week.

Lorna Kiprop from Kapkenda Girls finished fifth in 22:18.2 to get a place in the team.

Boys’ category

In the boys’ category, St Patrick’s Nickson Chepseba covered the 8km junior men’s course in 22:48.0 to carry the day with less challenge from his opponents. He was followed by Stephen Kiprotich of St Francis Kimuron who timed 23:08.4 with Kipsao’s Frankline Ng’elel closing the podium in 23:10.1.

Geoffrey Kamworor (Lelboinet ), Ibrahim Kemboi (Atnas Kandie Secondary) and Erick Kiprono (St Patrick’s) timed 23:24.2, 23:47.8 and 23:54.1 to join the district team .

In decathlon, Samson Kosgei from Kapkessum secondary collected 6,732 points to top after finishing the ten events. Silas Too,Titus Kosgei (St Patrick’s), Victor Rotich (Kipsoen), and Emmanuel Rutto (St Francis Kimuron) form the district team.
