Mugo and Laja celebrate Mashujaa day in style at Sea-link course

Home club’s John Mugo and Fredrick Laja went home in celebrations after claiming top spots in this year’s Mashujaa day golf tournament played at the par 71 Sea-link Mombasa course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

Mugo playing off handicap 21 proved his might after producing the best day’s score of 40 stable ford points to emerge the overall Men member winner in the day long stable ford tournament supported by Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).

Though Mugo scratched two holes number 5 and 14, he fought on to sink a rare single birdie at hole 17 par 5 with additional four level pars against a mixed pot of bogey shots in the rest of the 18 holes to claim the top spot.

“This is a great honor standing here at the podium after a long time and its due to patience and constant training that has finally paid off in a day when we are all celebrating Mashujaa Day and I am happy to be this year’s golf Shujaa,” said Mugo.

Handicap 10 Tirus Githaiga brought 39 points to claim the runners up prize, beating the Club chairman handicap 18 Paul Munyao to the third slot by a single point difference.

Gladys Kasi playing off handicap 23 was the Lady member winner on count back score of 37 points after tying on the same score with second placed handicap 36 Jackline Mutahi while handicap 30 Winfred Ndunge was third with 34 points.

The tournament graced by among others the Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) General Charles Muriu Kahariri, saw handicap 19 Fredrick Laja record 37 points to emerge the Kenya Defense forces Golf association (KDFGA) division A winner.

Kenya Navy golf captain Major Joel Mochanga playing off handicap 8 was the runners up on 36 points beating handicap 19 James Kirumba to the third slot by a single point.

Brigadier Maroa Gati playing off handicap 24 was the KDFGA division B winner on 37 points while handicap 22 Tarit Kimtai on 29 points and handicap 27 Evander Amonde with 27 points were the runners up and third placed respectively.

The KDFGA lady winner on 38 points was handicap 22 Orpha Wamaitha beating handicap 16 Grace Kwamboka to the runners up slot by a four points difference.

Club Chairman Paul Munyao praised KDF for their efforts in supporting golf especially at the club and promised to nurture the relationship between the two bodies to prosper for a long time.

Kenya Defense Force Golfers Association (KDFGA) Patron Major General Erick Kinuthia, flanked by among other Officials Brigadier Timothy Lekolol said they were honored to be back and thanked all the Club officials for making the day’s event successful and enjoyable.

Elsewhere at the Nanyuki Sports golf course on the same day, handicap 28 Mwangi Muthini was also separately in celebration after carding 42 points to clinch this year’s Mashujaa trophy.

Handicap 12 Michael Mwirigi was the men's winner on account back score of 41 points beating handicap 28 Mwaniki Mwariri on the same points to the runners up slot while handicap 5 Mark Kirimi settled for the third slot with 38 points.

Wachuka Jenny playing off handicap 34 was the Lady winner with 37 points while handicap 30 Becy Ngatia was the runners up with a count back score of 36 points tying on the same score with third placed handicap 24 Rose Komu.

The  gross winner  on 79 gross was won by handicap 3 Peter Waweru and handicap 26 Margaret Kalekye from Vet lab sport club brought 34 points to win the guest prize.

Handicap 32 Mathia Yinda on 38 points walked home with the Cat B Men prize while handicap 47 Sarah Gatumbo with 47 points and handicap 30 Chavez Kaara on 27 points were the Lay and junior winners respectively.

And at Thika sports club also in the same day, the four-ball  team of Emma Gachomba, Ann Kariuki, Judy Waihenya and Eunice Muthemba proved un-beatable after playing out their hearts by returning a combined score of 147 points to emerge the overall team winners of the 20th leg of the ongoing KCB East Africa Golf Tour.

“We formed the group a few days before the tournament. Our aim was to play together and register a win to get a chance to participate at the tour’s grand finale. I am proud of each member of the team for putting a spirited fight in an event that was very competitive. After today’s victory, we will go back to training in preparation for the grand finale,” said Gachomba.

The team of Liz Mocheche, Walsh Irungu, Wayne Cook and Ian Irungu settled for the runners up slot after recording a combined score of 142 points.

Handicap 7 Sam Njenga carded an impressive 41 stable ford points to emerge the Individual overall winner

While handicap 9 David Karuma with 38 points and handicap 36 Dr. Lucy Wanjiru on 41 points were the men and the lady winners respectively.

Allan Kirui playing off handicap 21 was the staff winner after producing a score of 38 points to scoop the staff beating handicap 12 Peter Mwaura to the runners up slot by a single point difference and Timothy Muita playing off 28 returned 40 points to win the guest prize.

The junior winner on 40 points was handicap 36 Jesse Kirunga and Charles Musungu won the longest drive award in the men’s category while L. Apukey claimed it in the ladies’ section.
