The meeting underscored the urgency of harmonizing regional efforts.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) convened a high-level coordination meeting of Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation in the implementation of Agenda 2063.

The session, led by IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, brought together heads of RECs and RMs to align efforts and improve coordination in delivering the AU’s long-term vision for an integrated and prosperous Africa.

Chaired by African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the meeting underscored the urgency of harmonizing regional efforts.

Youssouf lauded the RECs for their vital role in regional integration and stressed the need to shift from fragmented initiatives to coordinated action.

“The future of Africa lies in collective delivery and unity of purpose,” he stated.

Dr. Gebeyehu noted key milestones achieved during IGAD’s tenure as chair of the Coordination Platform.

These include initiating formal talks on securing a dedicated AU budget for REC activities, as stipulated in the 2021 Protocol between the AU and RECs/RMs, and achieving institutional recognition of RECs within the AU Commission's structure, further cementing their role in continental governance.

Participants reiterated the importance of joint resource mobilization, clearly defined roles among RECs, and strong political will to accelerate the goals of Agenda 2063.

The outcomes of the meeting will feed into discussions at the 7th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, where leaders will evaluate progress and outline next steps.
