Three University of Nairobi students drowned while four others were rescued after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria on Saturday.

Port Victoria police commander Isaaya Mosse said the students were part of a group of Christians from different parts of the country who converged at Port Victoria in Budalang'i constituency for special prayers to usher in the new year.

They drowned at Mulokoba beach after their boat capsized. "The group had taken a brief break and decided to take a boat ride when the boat overturned on the lake," said Mosse.

According to the police boss, the incident was reported at around 4.00 pm on Saturday barely ours into the new year.

Officers from the Coast Guard had retrieved two bodies by mid-morning today according to Mr Mosse.

"The Coast Guard has been joined by a group of divers who are assisting in the search of the remaining body," said the officer.

Police indicated that the seven students boarded the vessel that was being steered by an 11-year-old boy.

Onlookers near the scene rescued the four almost immediately and the boy who was steering the vessel.

Mr Mosse has urged those interested to use the boats on the lake to wear protective gear including lifesaver jackets before boarding the vessels.

Geoffrey Okello from port Victoria SDA church which has been hosting the faithful said he was shocked by the incident.

Mr Okello was among a team of divers who helped in the rescue mission of his flock. According to him, the victims are part of a team of faithful who traveled from far to spread the gospel in Budalang'i.
