A popular entertainment joint at Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi, is facing scrutiny following the controversial death of a Strathmore University student.
The incident allegedly occurred between the late hours of Friday, February 14, and the early hours of Saturday, February 15.
According to a post by the victim's brother on X, the body was found on the stairs. A police report confirmed the student was killed.
In response, Mass House issued a statement saying: "Despite us being unable to share any detailed information regarding the incident, we at Masshouse are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities in their ongoing investigation in order to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident."
The news has sparked uproar on social media, with many questioning security measures at the club.
One X user, @AnthonyRedrum, wrote: “The club is responsible for ensuring customer security. If car break-ins occur while patrons are inside, they should be held accountable.”
Another, @simplynairobi, criticised Masshouse’s response: “Calling a murder an ‘incident’ is disrespectful. Losing a phone is an incident—being strangled to death is not. Have some respect for the family.”
Despite the backlash, Masshouse maintains it is committed to transparency and will share updates as investigations progress. “Ensuring the safety and well-being of our clients remains our top priority,” the club stated.
Rising insecurity in Nairobi’s nightlife scene
Masshouse, which opened its doors in October last year, has quickly become one of Nairobi's most popular entertainment spots, attracting large crowds for its nightlife and events.
However, this latest incident has raised concerns about security and management policies.
Along Ngong Road, patrons have frequently reported incidents of theft and violence, with allegations that some clubs neglect security measures. Many say club management often fails to act on complaints of theft and harassment.
Amid the public outcry, revellers are now demanding the release of CCTV footage to clarify the events leading to the student’s death.
Authorities have launched an investigation, but police have yet to issue an official statement.
