Sponge cakes are the ultimate, easy to make, go-to dessert. They’ve been a favorite snack for a long time and are still pretty popular to date.

The sponge cake is famously known for its distinguishable features. It’s soft, fluffy and has a light texture, similar to a sponge. When made the right way, it should melt in the mouth as soon as it hits your tongue.

Depending on what flavors you would like, you can customize your cake. You can add whipped cream or put in layers of chocolate that is entirely up to you.

If this is titillating your taste buds already here is how you can get started on making a basic sponge cake like today.

What you need:

The amazing thing about sponge cakes is the simplicity when it comes to ingredients. Of course you can choose to add more ingredients as you become a pro at baking them, but for beginners, it’s best to start with the basics which are, five eggs, 100ml of milk, three quarter cup of fine sugar, one cup of cake flour, six tablespoons of vegetable oil and vanilla extract.

Preparation:

Start by separating the egg yolks in one bowl and the egg whites in another. You can use a yolk separator or just carefully separate them into two different bowls.

Next, you will pour in about a quarter cup of the fine sugar in the bowl with the egg yolks and mix them together.

The next step is to pour in six tablespoons of vegetable oil and 100ml of milk into the bowl and mix well. You will then sieve in the flour and mix until you get a paste.

Afterwards, you will get the other bowl with egg whites and pour in a few drops of the vanilla extract. You will need to work with an electrical mixer or just mix until the mixture fluffs up. As you continue mixing, add the cup of fine sugar in bits.

Continue mixing for a while until the mixture turns a bit stiff and creamy in texture.

You will now scoop some of the creamy mixture one bit at a time into the bowl with the egg yolk mixture and mix. It’s very important to ensure everything is evenly mixed in so don’t rush this step.

When that’s done, you will now prepare for baking. You will need a clean backing pan which you need to grease at the bottom and line with parchment paper.

Pour in your cake batter and before you move on to anything else, you should use a thin wooden stick like a skewer stick to lightly stir the batter slowly. This step will help to prevent any holes from forming in your cake for a more even and spongy consistency.

Finally, lightly tap the baking pan on a flat surface to get rid of any bubbles that are trapped.

Preheat your oven for about 10 minutes at 170°C then place the pan with the batter and bake for 30 minutes.

When your cake is ready, carefully remove the pan from the oven and let it cool. Remove the parchment paper and enjoy.

If you want, you can customize it by adding layers of cream and fresh fruits for added flavor.
