It is now emerging that the food cooked and served in some city hotels is prepared by unauthorised persons.
The revelation emerged during a session between the Assembly Health Committee and the executive led by Health County Executive Committee member Suzanne Silantoi.
Silantoi was summoned to shed light on the matter after the Committee's investigations found that out of 400,000 certificates issued by the County, 580 were found to be fake. The genuine documents are issued by Nairobi City County.
The health CEC was accompanied by the Chief Officer in charge of Health Facilities Geoffrey Mosiria, Chief Officer for Public Health Tom Nyakaba, and the acting Director of Environmental Health, Margaret Sunguti. "There is nowhere, where I gave my signature on the medical certificates...but from the investigations, I am aware of fake medical certificates following the complaints that came to the office of the Chief Officer," Sunguti said.
She added that the medical certification exercise has been digitalised by the Nairobi Revenue Authority (NRA), where the officials have to go through all the documentation before issuing the certificates.
The certification is supposed to be issued to all food service professionals by the health department.
The application fee ranges between Sh700 to Sh1000 but it is suspected that the fake ones could be from insiders or crafty street dealers who sell them at a cheaper fee.
Silantoi asked the committee to give her office time to submit a clear report. Her request was declined by the Assembly Committee Chairman Maurice Ochieng.
