Over 4,000 graduates from Mount Kenya University can breathe a sigh of relief after the Founder and Chairman of the institution Simon Gicharu announced a waiver of student levies. Gicharu said the waiver applies to all past students who have not collected their certificates. Past graduands owed the institution about Sh80 million, which was still accumulating in the form of penalties for not having cleared the fees.
"Over 4,000 past students have accumulated storage fees, library arrears, and late return of graduation gowns. In total, the levies amount to about Sh80 million," he said during the recent graduation ceremony. The issue of uncollected certificates was worsened by the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
