Popular former Miss World, Kenya, Cecilia Mwangi was over the weekend honoured with the Young Achievers Award 2009 by Women Students Welfare Association (WOSWA), an initiative of University of Nairobi.
The award was in recognition of her involvement in the anti-jiggers campaign for the last two years.
The award is the third in two months. Usaid was the first to crown her with the Global Leadership and Management Award before Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) crowned her for her efforts in sensitising Kenyans about the jigger menace.
"It is so overwhelming for me to get this recognition. But above all, I owe it to all the people, leaders, celebrities and ordinary Kenyans who have been supporting the noble campaign," Cecilia told MondayBlues.
"I am looking forward to see more Kenyans come on board and support the anti-jiggers campaign," she added.
The colourful ceremony attended by an array of prominent personalities also saw the Prime Minister’s wife, Ida Odinga, and Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairperson, Rukia Subow also awarded for their role in mentoring Kenyan youth.
Mongolo’s political career threatened
Celebrity councillor George Mwangangi aka Mongolo may be on his way out from ‘power’ if current rumours are anything to go by. The comedian-turned-politician is likely to be degazetted by the party that nominated him to Nairobi City Council in 2007. Word has it that the youthful councillor is among three nominated ODM councillors whose nominations are due for revocation this week.
Sources have it that Mongolo has been rubbing shoulders with politicians who are not aligned to his party something that hasn’t gone well with some senior politicians in ODM. The new changes come weeks before the slated mayoral elections.
MP’s sex scandal with city schoolgirl
A flamboyant MP known for his lavish lifestyle is exercising his political power the wrong way.
The youthful mheshimiwa, a first timer in the august House recently got involved with a high school girl who had gone to his office seeking financial assistance.
The girl, a student from a leading Nairobi girls’ school had gone to the MPs office for bursary funds to clear her school fee arrears. Having come from his constituency, the mheshimiwa pledged to assist her. However, that same day, the MP from Western Kenya sought sexual favours from the young girl whom he convinced to stay with him for a night.
Shamelessly, last week, the MP bragged to his colleagues how he had ‘slept’ with the young schoolgirl before allowing her back to school the following morning. Our sources, -fellow MPs, described the matter as ‘very evil.’
