Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has crowned former Miss World Kenya beauty queen Cecilia Mwangi this year’s winner of the Distinguished Service Award for her national anti-jigger crusade. The award, which was presented by Vice-Chancellor, Mabel Imbuga at the university on Saturday, comes barely a month after the model (alongside Ahadi Kenya Trust) received an international award for the initiative.
In her speech to hundreds of JKUAT alumni, Prof Imbuga applauded Cecilia as a person "who has used her influence and made an impact in her services to the community worth to be emulated".
And in her speech, the anti-jiggers ambassador challenged the university to set up a research unit to develop a remedy for the jigger menace, which has grounded the lives of hundreds of Kenyans, especially in Central Province.
"The jigger menace is real and needs a collective effort from all. People need to be educated on this issue. But above all, I believe our universities should carry out a study which will lead to the total eradication of jiggers in the country," she said.
The selection of a winner for the coveted award is done through online voting in which Cecilia got a resounding 97 percent of the votes.
