Kisii Governor takes measures to end theft of drugs in county hospitals

Health & Science

Governor James Ongwae has promised a modern pharmaceutical centre to curb theft of drugs in public health facilities. The governor said this yesterday while flagging off a drug consignment worth over Sh17 million to 100 hospitals in the county.

Mr Ongwae also said that a team of inspectors will be dispatched to all sub county hospitals to inspect how medicines bought by his administration are being used.

"We have been receiving complaints from the public about shortage of drugs in some health facilities. We are unable to tell who the culprits are," Ongwae said.

He said his administration spent over Sh50 million in the past few months to buy drugs.

"Kisii Level Five Hospital has received drugs worth Sh4.5 million. We will in the next few months buy another consignment of drugs for this facility," he said.

He added: "We spend almost 50 per cent of our budget allocation on health, which is way beyond the Abuja Declaration of 15 per cent. We need to be modest enough and think of our brothers and sisters who should be benefiting from these drugs."

Kisii level Five CEO Enock Ondari said that the hospital spends almost Sh19 million quarterly on drugs. "This is an average of about Sh5 million per month. Emerging diseases particularly renal ailments that are consuming a huge chunk of our money," he said.
