Lupita Nyong'o lauds youth for standing against Finance Bill

Lupita Nyong'o has opined on the Finance Bill protests.

Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, praised Kenyans who went to the streets to express their displeasure at the controversial Financial Bill.

Lupita lauded the youth for exercising their democratic right but said she was saddened that lives were lost in the process.

“I salute the Kenyan youth and I am grateful to them for coming together in an extraordinary way to stand up against the problematic Finance Bill 2024 as well as to defend and promote the democratic rights of the Kenyan people.

"I am extremely saddened that lives have been lost in the process, and my thoughts are with the victims' families,” she said.

Lupita further called upon the Kenyan government to find amicable ways of uniting the people and address concerns raised by the masses.

This comes just hours after chaos ensued when protesters gained access to parliament buildings.

Chanting ‘Ruto must go’ the protesters made their way to August House, undeterred, despite efforts by police to disperse them.

They then stormed the compound and destroyed property, vandalising furniture and even serving themselves food at the cafeteria.

President William Ruto, in his address, said the events marked a critical point in how the government responds to threats to national security.

He added that normalcy would be restored and the planners of the demos would be brought to book.

"I hereby put on notice the planners, financiers, orchestrators and abettors of violence and anarchy that these security infrastructures established to protect our republic and its sovereignty, will be deployed to secure the country and restore normalcy.

"The government will therefore uphold its constitutional mandate to secure our nation and its development and shall treat every threat to national security and the integrity of our state as an existential danger to our Republic," he said.

Ruto told Kenyans that there would be an ‘expeditious response’ to what he termed as treasonous events.
