Covid-19: 14 succumb to virus as Kenya records 53 new infections

Kenya has recorded 53 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 4,054 raising the country's caseload to 322,096.

In a statement on Sunday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 1.2 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 3,258,097.

Out of the new patients,19 are female, whereas 34 are male, with the youngest carrier being a nine-month-old baby and the oldest aged 89.

Of the new cases, five are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution, Nairobi County recorded 22 cases, Nakuru 10, Machakos 6, Kiambu 5, Kakamega 3, Siaya and Uasin Gishu 2 cases each, Migori, Mombasa and Tharaka Nithi a case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 death toll has risen to 5,621 after 14 deaths were reported from the virus in the last 24 hours.

Total recoveries now stand at 295,971 after 274 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours 261 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme and 13 from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 243,372 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 52,599 are from various hospitals countrywide.

Admitted

A total of 250 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 3,31 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

Seven (7) patients are in the ICU all of them are on ventilatory support. No patient is under observation.

Another 66 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen 64 of them in the general wards, while two patients are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccinated

In terms of vaccination, Kenya has so far administered 13,599,070 Covid-19 vaccines across the country according to the Ministry of Health latest records.

Of these, 6,910,914 have been partially vaccinated while 6,241,813 have been fully vaccinated.

CS Kagwe said the ministry is conducting a mass vaccination in the 47 counties from January 28 to get many people vaccinated.
