Patients’ pain as strike continues

Patients across Nairobi continue to feel the pinch of the absence of nurses as no activity seems not to be going on in many public hospitals.

Some have been stranded or have had to wait for long hours without getting any health services. At Ofafa Jericho Health Centre in Makadara, there is little going on.

The hospital appears deserted and the few nurses present are seen chatting.

Erastus Ochieng, who is his 20s and lives in Jericho estate, went to the hospital accompanied by a friend only to be told an hour later that there were no services.

No services

“I started feeling unwell yesterday. The symptoms are of malaria. I came here and waited only to be told that they could not help me,” Ochieng said.

He added that he would buy malaria drugs and see if he would get better because he could not afford a private hospital.

Angela Auko 28, also a resident of Jericho, was rudely told by the nurses to go to a private hospital because there were no doctors and the nurses were not working.

“They were rude, telling me that there are no doctors in the hospital and that I should go to a private hospital,” Auko said.
