Every one in 20 children aged 14 years and below is living with some form of disability worldwide, a new study has revealed.
This is equivalent to 93 million children by global estimates which, according to a report by a children’s organisation, are however, speculative. The report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) on the State of World Children Living with Disabilities pointed out education as one of the critical sectors that children fail to fully benefit from.
Discrimination
It was launched on Thursday morning at a Nairobi hotel and called for the fight against discrimination and the enhancement of awareness of disability in children.
The report, whose theme is Supporting Inclusion at Birth, at School and in Life, indicated that children with disabilities are disproportionately denied their right to education, which undermines their ability to enjoy the full rights of citizenship, find gainful employment and take up valued roles in society.
The report further calls for the removal of barriers to inclusion in education, health and other necessary amenities. Children with disabilities, the report points out, are denied their right to education, which undermines their ability to enjoy the full rights of citizenship.
Without proper education, these children fail to find gainful employment and can therefore not take up valued roles in society.
