Kenya Power has announced to millions of Kenyans who rely on prepaid meters for electricity that they will need to update their token meters by August 31.

While launching the ‘Update Token Meter Yako’ campaign in Nairobi, the company’s Managing Director, Joseph Siror, stated that the exercise aims to transition prepaid users to a new system as the current one is set to expire.

According to Siror, failure to reset and update will result in consumers being unable to use newly purchased tokens.

How to update your token meter

To update, Siror says prepaid customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power that they will use to reset and update their token meters.

A reset and an update code.

The 20-digit numbers should be entered into the prepaid meters in the correct sequence: reset code first, followed by the update code.

Once the update is complete, the meter will accept new electricity tokens going forward and will not affect the electricity tariff a customer is on.

However, if the meter update is unsuccessful, the token meter will not accept the generated tokens.

According to Siror, the exercise is free of charge. However, before starting the process, prepaid customers should ensure they load any previously purchased tokens or risk losing them.

The update exercise is set to begin on Wednesday, June 12.
