How Kenyan singer Supeyo's 'Sakawera' EP blends Maasai tradition and modernity

Singer Supeyo has released his first music project, an EP called 'Sakawera'. This exciting collection of songs mixes traditional Kenyan sounds with modern music styles like electronic beats.

It also tells deep stories through its lyrics. He was inspired by Maasai chants, gospel music, and the lively energy of the streets. His EP, he explains, is a reflection of his culture and a new beginning for him as an artist.

Supeyo grew up in a home where different kinds of music were played. His family loved gospel guitar music, benga, and hip-hop. Because of this, he does not believe in sticking to one style.

His EP Sakawera, which means “hustling for a job or hustling” in sheng, brings together old Kenyan sounds and new Afrofusion styles.

According to Supeyo, the music represents movement, tension, and release, just like the ups and downs of life.

Through this EP, he shares his personal journey. He has struggled with self-doubt, but now he chooses confidence and determination.

The songs talk about the difficulties people face when trying to move forward in life. The title track, Sakawera, focuses on the challenge of escaping situations that keep people stuck.

He says he has seen many talented people waste their potential, and his music is for those who keep pushing forward instead of just surviving. He wants to encourage people to grow and succeed, just like the brave warriors in his community.

Creating this EP was not easy. Supeyo paid for everything himself and produced it independently.

“There were many challenges, but I kept going with patience and faith. I am grateful for the musicians and producers who believed in this dream and helped him bring it to life,” he says.
