Godfrey Bijumo, better known as Slim G, has made a name for himself in the music industry. He recently released his 10-track album, dubbed “Chunya”.
“Chunya is a Luo word meaning ‘the heart of a man,’. This album chronicles my life’s journey. It’s a raw and honest exploration of the challenges I faced, the lows I hit, and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit, he says.
Hailing from Migori County, Slim G’s journey to Nairobi was marked by humble beginnings. Arriving in the bustling city with limited resources, he quickly adapted to the fast-paced lifestyle and embraced the opportunities it presented.
“I came to Nairobi in 1997, from Muhuru Bay, Kingariso village in Migori County. At the time, I was broke with no money on me. I had to hitch a lift in a bus that had been used to transport a dead body in my home area,” he narrates.
Once in Nairobi, Slim G would time and again participate in various rap battles just to make ends meet.
Living in Nairobi, he admits, can be both exciting and overwhelming. The vibrant city life and stunning natural beauty can be a stark contrast to the quiet rural areas. The city’s nightlife can also be quite different depending on one’s background and preferences.
Adjusting to Nairobi’s lifestyle took time, but eventually, Slim G was able to integrate into the urban environment. While he embraced the city’s opportunities, he never forgot his roots.
“Although I loved the many good things I saw in Nairobi, adjusting to the lifestyle wasn’t easy. It took time to become familiar with it, but eventually, I adapted and found my way,” he says.
