A Ugandan TikToker has been sentenced to six years in jail for insulting President Yoweri Museveni and his family.
Edward Awebwa had last week pleaded guilty to charges of hate speech and disseminating malicious information.
According to Daily Monitor, the prosecution argued that the accused, between February and March 2024, had used his TikTok account ‘Save Media Uganda’ to ridicule Museveni, First Lady Jane Museveni and their son CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
It was alleged that Awebwa had also shared misleading information about an increase in taxes.
While delivering the sentence, Chief Magistrate Stellah-Maris Amabilisi said the Presidency should be respected and that this ruling was to ensure such incidents come to an end.
She added that Awebwa used vulgar language that openly demeaned the Head of State and his family.
“The accused is pleading for mercy but he does not look remorseful at all for his acts…he is a person who was aware of what he was doing and the court had an opportunity to even see the video, the language that was being used was really vulgar.
“The court is of the opinion that the accused deserves a punishment which will enable him to learn so that next time he will respect the president, the first lady and first son,” said Amabilisi.
Adding: “…the court sentences the accused as follows; six years imprisonment for each of the four accounts, with the sentences to run concurrently at Kigo Upper Prison.”
