State Department for Industry Principal Secretary Dr Juma Mukhwana has called for concerted efforts to improve laboratory accreditation and boost local exports.

Speaking on Thursday, October 3, in Nairobi, Mukhwana said accredited laboratories are essential for ensuring that Kenyan products meet international quality standards, which is crucial for accessing various markets, including the European Union and the United States.

“We have been working hard to open up international markets, both within East Africa and the broader African region. We are part of the EAC, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and COMESA. We have also opened up a market with the European Union,” he said.

He explained that products tested in accredited laboratories can be accepted in other countries, enhancing Kenya's reputation in international trade.

“If a product is tested in Kenya, it can be accepted in other countries, like Ghana, because our laboratories are accredited,” he added.

Mukhwana urged Kenyan operators to seek accreditation from the Kenya National Accreditation Service (KENAS), saying that while accreditation is not mandatory, it is essential for ensuring recognition of services and certificates globally.

“To grow business between Kenya and the EU, we need to sell nearly 13,000 products,” the PS added.

“However, you won’t be able to access these markets without proper testing and accreditation.”

He called on laboratories that have yet to be accredited to pursue this status to enable the certification of a range of products, including flowers, avocados, coffee, and textiles.
