Covid-19: Kenya records 847 new cases, 167 admitted in ICU

Kenya on Saturday, July 24 recorded 847 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 6,080 raising the country's caseload to 196,745. 

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 13.9 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to are 2,087,582.

Out of the new patients, 485 are male, whereas 362 are female, with the youngest carrier being a five-day-old infant, and the oldest aged 97.

Of the new cases, 27 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution, Nairobi lead with 397, Busia 66, Kiambu 58, Nakuru 46, Mombasa 40, Nyeri 35, Machakos 29, Kilifi 23, Turkana 17, Kitui 14, Muranga 12, Kericho 11, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua 10 cases each, Garissa, Kajiado, Siaya 8 cases each, Homa Bay 7, Kisumu, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu 6 cases each, Migori 5, Vihiga 4, Lamu and Nyamira 3 cases each, Meru, Narok, West Pokot and Laikipia 2 caeses each.

Taita Taveta, Tana River, Trans Nzoia, Embu, Kakamega, Kisii and Kwale recorded a case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 3,849 after 11 patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The total recoveries so far stand at 185,762 after 722 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 567 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 155 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 148,173 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 37,589 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,277 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 3,705 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and sixty-seven (167) patients are in the ICU, 35 of whom are on ventilatory support and 80 on supplemental oxygen. Fifty-two (52) patients are on observation.

Another 366 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 323 of them in general wards and 43 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at July 24, 2021, administered 1,670,941 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,046,526 while the second doses are 624,415.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 194,763, Others 179,835, Health Workers 110,823, Teachers 89,482 while Security Officers are at 49,512.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 59.7 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.3 per cent.
