President Uhuru Kenyatta joined Ugandans in mourning the Bank of Uganda’s Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile.
In a statement on Sunday, January 23 morning, the bank confirmed that Mutebile died at around 5 am while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.
“Further announcements will be made in due course. The bank of Uganda family together with his family and friends joins the nation in mourning his loss,” the statement read in part.
In his condolence message via a State House post on Twitter, President Uhuru eulogised the departed 72-year-old as ‘a reformer whose tenure at the helm of the Bank of Uganda ensured his country's and the region's economic stability and progress'.
Mutebile was admitted to the hospital on December 31, 2021, after he collapsed due to complications related to diabetes.
Mutebile has served as governor and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Uganda for two decades.
Prior to that, he had served as secretary to the Treasury from 1992 to 2001 when he was appointed to govern the state bank.
