There’s nothing worse than waking up to an angry pimple glaring back at you in the mirror, especially right before an important event. And let’s not forget the accompanying headache, pure agony! The good news is; it doesn’t have to ruin your day. Please note that while these tips can be helpful, they do not constitute a diagnosis or treatment for persistent breakouts.

Gentle cleansing

The first step in your skincare routine should be cleansing, but avoid overdoing it. Wash your face twice daily with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. Skip harsh scrubs, which can irritate the skin and worsen breakouts.

Targeted spot treatments

Visit your local pharmacy or order online spot treatments containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide (to kill acne-causing bacteria), salicylic acid (to unclog pores), or sulphur (to calm inflammation). Apply a small amount directly to the pimple after cleansing.

Hands off!

As tempting as it is to squeeze or pop a pimple, resist the urge. Picking at pimples can push bacteria deeper into the skin, causing more inflammation and potential scarring.

Hydration and moisturising

This has become a mantra among dermatologists. Yes, even oily skin needs moisture. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to maintain skin balance and prevent excessive oil production.

Lifestyle adjustments

Small lifestyle changes can make a significant difference. Regularly clean your pillowcases, keep your hair away from your face, avoid touching your face and manage stress levels, as stress can trigger breakouts.

Professional consultation

If breakouts persist despite your best efforts, consult a dermatologist. Prescription treatments like retinoids or antibiotics may be necessary for stubborn acne and only a dermatologist can prescribe the appropriate medication.
