Is Valentine’s Day overrated?

Relationships

Debate surrounding St. Valentine’s Day still linger despite it being one of the most celebrated day by lovers all over the globe.

Many are of the thought that it should be skipped altogether while there are those who strongly oppose and support.

Whether you choose to celebrate it or not, 14th February is still known as the day of love across the world. It a day when couples buy roses, chocolates and other gifts for their significant others.

For those who don’t believe in it, it is just a normal day and is not treated any differently.

Below are some of the reasons why you should, or should not, celebrate Valentine’s Day.

It’s a fun tradition

Valentine’s Day is worth celebrating because it is the one day when you get to commemorate your union. On this day, even the most serious people get excited when they receive a box of chocolates at their work desk on that morning. The tradition is meant to be light hearted and not be taken too seriously. Have fun with it and celebrate this special day with your loved one.

It doesn’t have to be complex

Throughout history, the holiday has been marked by open gestures of love such as huge flower bouquets, fancy dinner dates and romantic trips. These gestures might not fit within a busy schedule or a small budget. Luckily, you don’t always have to do what everyone else is doing. You don’t have to make reservations at an expensive restaurant or plan a weekend getaway. What matters is that you both do something that’s special to you. Genuine love is not always about extravagant gestures.

You don’t have to have a valentine

One reason why some people don’t celebrate the holiday is because they don’t have a romantic partner to celebrate it with. The myth that you can only celebrate it when you are dating or married is not true. In fact the day also signifies friendship and admiration for someone you care about. If you are single on Valentine’s Day, use it to pamper and spoil yourself as a way of appreciating yourself as well. You can go a step further and appreciate those who don’t have a valentine because they are widowed or divorced. Remember that this day is not only about romantic love. Use it to extend love and kindness to others.

You’re just not into it

On the flip side, there are also some reasons as to why Valentine’s Day still feels overrated. Some would rather not celebrate it because of religious purposes or even bad past experiences. The day is considered a normal day because you probably still have to report to work, go to school etc. In other cases, some people just find it unnecessary and cheesy because you should be showing love on a daily basis. For these reasons, the holiday loses its meaning.

It feels forced

Valentine’s Day is overrated to many because of the pressure that society has put on it. There are certain expectations that people generally have when it comes to the holiday. If you are dating or married and you don’t get your significant other a gift, you might end up looking like a jerk for not doing so. Some would rather be spontaneous and celebrate their love on days that are significant such as anniversaries.

It doesn’t necessarily signify true love

With social media platforms, couples always look happy while posting the gifts and trips they take on Valentine’s Day. When it comes to celebrity couples especially, the gestures are usually more grand and exciting as they celebrate the holiday. Seeing this might make you feel like your relationship is insignificant because you didn’t go out on a date or buy a huge gift for your partner. The truth is, there are still many, very happy couples who do not wait for Valentine’s Day.

In fact, some couples even break up days before or after the holiday. In short, no amount of gifts on Valentine’s Day can take away the issues a couple may be having. At the end of the day, true love does not always have to advertise itself.
