Negative studies into statins stop people taking the drugs, putting them at greater risk of heart attack.
Researchers in Denmark found that coming off the cholesterol-busting medication early increased the risk of heart attack by 26% and the danger of dying from cardiovascular disease by 18%.
They found that for every negative medical report on statins , there was a 9% increased risk of people coming off the pills within the first six months.
The risk of discontinuing statins dropped by 8% after exposure to positive reports about the medication.
The study, published in the European Heart Journal, found that around one in six patients stopped taking statins early.
The pills can cause muscle aches and rhabdomyolysis, when muscle is broken down. But Prof Borge Nordestgaard, of Copenhagen University Hospital, said: “Statins represent a success story in modern medicine.”
