Breakfast cannot be a mandazi, bread, or buns affair every morning. You need to wake up once in a while and treat yourself to a five-star breakfast meal.

You can either innovate something extraordinary from the ordinary or create a good meal with different ingredients.

Hotdogs act as a good treat to have for breakfast. Instead of getting one from the supermarket, you can make one from home with just a few ingredients. They are a classic comfort food, consisting of a sausage, traditionally made from a blend of pork, beef, or a combination of meats, encased in a cylindrical shape.

These sausages are typically served in a sliced bun, accompanied by various condiments and toppings.

Here is a quick recipe you can use to make tasty hotdogs for yourself, and at the comfort of your home.

Ingredients:

Four sausages or smokies (pork, beef, chicken, or a mix)

Two hotdog buns

One onion (Chopped into rings)

Soy sauce

Pepper (optional)

Toppings (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, relish, onions, sauerkraut, cheese, etc.)

Instructions:

If using uncooked sausages, preheat a pan to medium-high heat.

Place the sausages on the pan and cook for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally until they're evenly browned and cooked through.

If using pre-cooked sausages (smokies), heat them by boiling them in water for 5-7 minutes or grill them for a few minutes until they're heated through and slightly browned.

While the sausages are cooking, prepare your onions.

Saute the onion rings until they appear translucent. Add one spoonful of soy sauce and pepper. Let the mixture cook for about a minute and put aside.

Lightly toast the hotdog buns on the pan or in a toaster. This step adds a delightful crunch to the buns and prevents them from becoming soggy.

Place each cooked sausage or smokie in a toasted bun. Add the onions to the sausages.

Customise your hotdogs with a variety of toppings according to your preference. Common choices include Ketchup, Mustard (yellow, Dijon, or spicy), Mayonnaise, Relish (sweet or dill), Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), and Shredded cheese among others.

Serve the assembled hotdogs immediately while they're warm. Enjoy!
