I would like to be more sociable

Hi Chris,

I thought I was pretty sociable, but I have just met the most extraordinary character who seems to know everyone! I'm quite jealous. How is that even possible? Could I get to be more like that?

Knowing Everyone

Chris says,

Hi Knowing Everyone!

Most of us avoid strangers because we feel more comfortable with people we know. But some people can walk up to a newcomer and start a great conversation. They seem to know just about everyone, and can always suggest someone to help you out.

That's a wonderful skill to have, it's easy to learn, and will completely change your life. You'll find yourself bringing people together, helping people find a new job or a spouse. And you'll be admired everywhere.

Talking to strangers does not come naturally, so we keep quiet. But it's a skill worth learning because it's interacting with people, not money or possessions, which makes us happy. And especially meeting someone new.

Because when we talk to someone new, we always put our best face forward. And that makes us feel better about ourselves. When we're with friends we're more downbeat, and end up feeling less good about ourselves.

So how do you get started? Just make eye contact. Smile at receptionists. If someone smiles at you, smile back. Chat with shop assistants and waitstaff. And pretend to be confident whenever you meet someone new, then they won't know if you're feeling nervous.

But the real secret is your state of mind. So concentrate on helping other people get together, rather than trying to keep them to yourself. Everyone's glad of an introduction, and so you'll find you're very popular as a result!

When you meet someone new, keep an open mind and accept that anything might happen. Arrive early at parties, because people are more willing to talk when there are just a few of you. And always have an excuse ready for why you need to move on while the conversation's still hot!

Just get out there and have a go! You might meet someone who changes your whole life.

All the best,

Chris
