Signs someone is struggling

Living

Depression can be a stealthy adversary, often concealing its presence behind a veil of smiles and seemingly normal routines.

While the society has become more aware of the impact of depression, it is essential to recognise that the signs may not always be as obvious as we think. The truth is that most, if not all, of us are fighting invisible battles.

One of the cunning ways a mental breakdown manifests is through a desire to escape reality.

You might notice a person suddenly losing interest in activities they once enjoyed, cancelling plans frequently, or making excuses to avoid social gatherings.

Their once adventurous spirit might seem caged, yearning for freedom. Keep an eye out for this escape artiste within, and offer support by gently encouraging engagement in activities they used to find pleasure in.

Depression has a way of turning the volume down on a person's inner voice. Those silently battling depression often become withdrawn, speaking less and avoiding conversations about their emotional well-being.

If you notice your loved one becoming more introverted or struggling to express themselves, take the initiative to create a safe space for open and compassionate communication. Sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear to break the silence.

While it is common knowledge that mental challenges can affect one's mood, their impact on physical well-being often goes unnoticed. The subtle signs may include unexplained weight loss or gain, changes in appetite, or a lack of energy.

Remember, depression does not just cloud the mind; it can cast a shadow on the body too. In other cases, depression can lure the mind into a never-ending pursuit of perfection, creating a paradox where the person feels like they can never measure up.

They may strive for flawlessness in their work or personal life, often placing unrealistic expectations on themselves. Look out for signs of excessive self-criticism or fear of failure, and remind them that imperfections are what make us beautifully human.

And while some might struggle with insomnia, others find solace in extended hours of sleep. Excessive fatigue, oversleeping, or difficulty getting out of bed in the morning can be subtle indicators of underlying depression.

Encourage healthy sleep habits and help them establish a consistent routine to restore balance to their sleep patterns.
