Miraa trade threatens boys’ education

Living

Woman Representative Rose Mitaru has announced plans to initiate programmes aimed at rescuing the boy child from involvement in the miraa business and drug abuse.

Ms Mitaru said she will use part of the money under the Sh2 billion fund for county representatives from the national government to hold forums with parents to sensitise them on the need to educate their sons.

Speaking during a fundraiser in Machang'a Secondary School, Mbeere South Sub-County at the weekend, Mitaru said the area was losing young and energetic youths to the lucrative miraa business.

She said many boys from the area were dropping out of school to engage in the miraa business.

"The retention rate of boys in our local schools is very low. Many drop out to engage in the miraa business. Once I receive the money, I will also initiate projects that will help male adults to make a living," she said.

Mavuria Ward Representative Joseph Mwaniki said the gender, culture and social services department will draft a bill to ensure young boys are prohibited from engaging in the miraa business.
