Junior tennis sensation Mitchelle Onyancha finished top after winning all her matches at the International Tennis Federation/Confederation of Africa Tennis (ITF/CAT) East Africa Zonal championship in Nairobi.

By sweeping the podium in the girls under-14 category, Onyancha qualified for the Africa Junior Championship (AJC) to be held in Nigeria in April.

Onyancha, who departs today for South Africa for an ITF one-year scholarship, beat compatriot Stephanie Mbaya 6-2,6-0 to crown her victory in the round robin.

ITF has promised Onyancha another four-year scholarship should she excel in the one which commences tomorrow at Pretoria High Performance Centre.

It was a lucky escape for Mbaya who did not win in any of the matches, but gathered enough points to give her the Nigerian berth after finishing fourth overall.

Another Kenyan, Damaris Musera made it to the Nigeria championship after finishing third ahead of Mbaya after beating the latter 6-0, 6-2.

Ismael Changawa is the only Kenyan who sailed to AJC in the boys’ category after he was eliminated in the boys’ under-14 semi-finals.

Sudanese Samah Adam made it to Nigeria after finishing in second position.

The organisers were picking the top five best players in the various categories being contested at Parklands and Cheryl Fuasso has a chance to add Kenya the numbers today.

Fuasso battles for the singles’ slot with Anitha Nzeyimana and Sifa Harerimana of Burundi and Lena Akram of Sudan.
