They say fashion is all about putting on what you are most comfortable in but that statement is only partly true. There are some clothes that despite being comfortable and readily available, are just not flattering when you attempt to pull them off.

These clothes are heavy and unflattering and your personal style may elude you if you go with them. It is important to draw the line between comfort and unflattering, here are some fashion mistakes making you look heavier than you are:

Wearing baggy shirts

This trend may seem comfortable and easy to pull but it really isn’t. It needs to be done well in order to really pull off the look. For instance, when doing an oversized shirt you should be considerate of the length of the shirt and the size of the shoulders.

An oversized shirt is only as good as its design. If you want it oversized, always ensure it one size or two larger. If it is larger than that it will drown you and fail to accentuate your features.

The length is also key, ensure the shirt length reaches your thighs, so that it structures out like a dress not a borrowed pajama.

The oversized pants trend

This trend has been here for a while now, where people intentionally dress in oversized pants and add belts to hold it up. Well, the same logic applies to shirts as it does to pants, it is in how well an outfit is planned. Avoid putting on pants that are too large on the waist.

When going for oversized pants always ensure the waist fits, when it is the right size it will accentuate your features and the oversized pants will look good on you. Furthermore, you can easily balance the top area when your pants has structure and it fits.

Getting stripes wrong

When dressing in strips it is always important to check for the direction the patterns are moving towards, are they horizontal or vertical strips. In most cases when buying strip outfits always go for strips that have the lines running from top to bottom.

When you go for horizontal strips they make you look heavier than you are and this rule mainly applies to shirts and blouses. However, when it comes to dresses and skirts you can always pull a look with horizontal strips so long as you style it well.

Dressing in tight clothing

These kind of clothes include skinny jeans, bandage dresses and sometimes skirts. When you go for outfits that are too small it may come out as those you are forcing yourself into the clothes. You will obviously look heavier than you are because the tight clothes will bring focus to the wrong areas of your body.

For instance when you put on an extra tight trouser in the name of skinny jeans, it will leave the extra bulge around your waist hanging out because it cannot fit into the trouser and the final look will make you look like you tried fitting into your younger sister’s pants. Always go for pants that fit you so they can enhance your features.

Poorly balancing outfits

When choosing an outfit there are a number of fashion rules you need to stick to in order to get your outfits right. The number one and only rule when blending outfits is to focus on balancing your pieces. For instance, when doing an oversized shirt it important to match it with a skinny bottom.

When you improperly match your outfits the final outcome always makes you look heavier than you should. Like matching baggy pants with an oversized shirt will drown you. You need to balance out the proportions, give your outfit some structure and put focus on the important areas.
