Here’s how to make your own coffee table

DIY Fixes and Tips

Pallet boxes also known as shipping boxes are up-cycled and used all through the home in a myriad of ways. From sofas, tables, bookshelves, kitchen islands. There is nothing that a pallet will not do. Are you wondering whether a pallet coffee table may be good for your décor theme? Pallet coffee tables are very transitional; they work with most décor themes. Whether you move from shabby chic, contemporary or Scandinavian a pallet table will always move with you. The good news is you can make one right outside your home.

You will need 2 pallet boxes Sandpaper Primer Varnish and thinner or spray paint Brush 10mm glass top cut to size (optional)

Steps

1. When buying your pallet, select ones with ultra smooth wood. If you pick a rough pallet you will have to take it apart and have the wood sawed then joined a fresh, which beats the purpose of using a pallet. Also be on the lookout for protruding nails as these will make sanding impossible.

2. Ergonomically, a standard coffee table should be around 16-18 inches high. Make sure the pallets are close to this range when stacked.

3. Next you will sand your pallets until smooth. Begin with sandpaper p80 proceeding to p100.

4. If you are maintaining the wood finish, seal it with three coats of varnish. You will mix your varnish with thinner. Alternatively use clear spray paint.

5. Apply the first coat and allow to dry. After one hour, sand the pallets with the next number of sandpaper p150, dust it and apply another coat of varnish. Repeat the process until the third coat is dry then buff and apply one last coat.

6. If you are painting over the wood, you will need to apply a primer first. Allow it to dry for one hour then apply the primer one more time. Repeat primer application two more times allowing an hour in between. The more primer you use, the less paint you will need.

7. When your last coat of primer is dry, sand down the pallets with p150 sandpaper, dust them off and then spray them in the colour of your choice. Repeat the spraying until the pallets are evenly covered. Allow them to dry completely before stacking one on top of the other.

8. You can opt for a glass top which you will place right on top of the finished table.
