People have different perspectives and opinions when it comes to housework. With more women in the workforce, it sounds strange for someone to confidently say they are a stay-at-home mum.

While full-time homemaking has become an option for some, it's not without its challenges. Many stay-at-home mums struggle with things like feeling bored and unmotivated by the day-to-day, mundane tasks.

There are several ways to feel more productive and these five tips will help:

Build a more structured routine

Being at home with no boss to manage you comes with a lot of freedom. You are in charge of your own routine, which can be a curse and a blessing at the same time.

The fact that you can do most things on your own time can cause problems with laziness. You will allow yourself to procrastinate different tasks and slowly lose your motivation to do even the basic duties.

You could try and build drive through a stricter everyday routine. Time blocking is one way you could do that because you will designate different tasks for each hour instead of randomly choosing what to do.

Get dressed on weekdays

One of the best things about being at home is that you can choose to wear pyjamas every day. However, wearing the clothes you sleep in during the day can confuse your brain and slowly kill your enthusiasm.

Swap out your pyjamas for proper outfits, even if it's just a basic top and jeans and you will see the difference it makes.

Create new goals

Believing that everyone is busy with their lives except you can cause a slip into depression. You can change that and enhance your confidence by creating different goals for yourself.

A goal might be learning how to make different desserts, learning how to sew or any other skill you're interested in. You could break these down into weekly, monthly and yearly goals so you have something to work towards.

Find a bigger purpose

Being a stay-at-home wife doesn't mean that you have to let go of the things that are important to you. You have a purpose in you that is bigger than yourself, which you can still find a way to fulfil.

Some of the things you could do are devote your time to doing charity work or maybe even serving at church. Find out what that purpose is for you so that you feel inspired by the difference you're making in people's lives.

Appreciate the simple tasks

Sacrificing your career to stay at home isn't easy. It's difficult to transition from a working schedule to a new type of routine that doesn't always feel fulfilling.

What can help is shifting your mindset to recognize what you do as something meaningful. Remember how happy your kids usually are to come home to their mom every day or even how excited your husband is to have fresh food and a clean house.

Reflecting on these things can slowly bring back your motivation during times when you don't feel too confident.
