Bed wetting is normal, and is part of a child’s growth and developmental stage. However, there are times when our children get to an age when they should stop bed wetting but they don’t raising the question whether it has anything to do with how you dealt with it when they were younger.
As a parent, you need to figure out if it is caused by mental, emotional or physical issues. When your child gets to a certain age and they are still wetting their bed can be a cause of alarm. It can be embarrassing for the child as they wouldn’t want anyone else to know that they still wet their bed to avid risk of bullying.
Changes in the family, size of their bladder, sleeping patterns or genetics are some of the most common causes of bed wetting amongst children.
It is important to note that even in those kids who bed wet due to medical reasons, it is possible to take care the issue. Therefore, you shouldn’t beat yourself.
Here are some tips to help your child stop bed wetting.
i.Factors
Establishing the cause of the bed wetting can help you deal with the issue without many complications. Sometimes kids wet their beds because of emotional and mental strain.
In case your child starts wetting their bed for no reason, you may need to investigate their mental and emotional health. Also, having a small bladder or issues dealing with their bladder can cause this problem. Make sure to consult your physician so that you can rule this out.
ii.Manage fluid intake
If your child is a bed wetter, don’t give them fluids two hours before bed time. This will ensure that their bladder remains empty during this period and prevent the urge to pee at night.
Ensure that they take their fluids during the day and avoid as much as possible intake of fluids at night. This will ensure they sleep well without their bladder getting too full at night.
iii.Ensure they pee before bed time
Make sure that your child relieves themselves before going to bed. This will give room for urine storage in the bladder and also help in keeping track of their peeing pattern at night. Sometimes kids go to bed without peeing, and since some of them are heavy sleepers they end up wetting the bed.
iv.Wake them up in the middle of the night or early in the morning to pee
This is a great way to train their minds on waking up when they have the urge to pee. Set a pee time and after a couple of days their minds will start conditioning to wake up and pee at night to avoid wetting the bed.
v.Seek medical help
Sometimes they might be experiencing a medical issue that is causing bed wetting. It is important to rule out any medical issues that might cause bed wetting. As a parent, you should take this seriously as it happens in many cases.
vi.Encourage them
They already feel bad about it. Make sure to let them know that it is normal and should not be embarrassed about it. Make them feel comfortable as you deal with the issue. When it happens, help them clean up and do something nice to distract their minds.
