Everybody has some hair on their faces including the peach fuzz and some stray hairs that can appear on the chin area.
For the most part, women keep the whole discussion on body hair on the low because it’s considered unfeminine. That’s especially the case when it comes to facial hair. It’s a common thing to have them but at the same time, you won’t hear many people talking about it.
And you want to know why? Because, it is a bit embarrassing. Here’s why you have facial hair and what you can do about it.
Facial hair on women is usually finer as compared to that on men because of the hormonal balance in our bodies.
Everyone has male and female hormones but of course the male hormones like testosterone and androgen are more concentrated in men and the case is the same for women when it comes to female hormones.
Over time, the balance shifts, which can cause some of the facial hairs to become thicker and coarser. In these cases, it’s completely normal and there’s really no cause for alarm. Another underlying cause is the genetic history that runs in the family. If the women in your family have some chin hairs, thick sideburns or some stray stands on the neck, the same might happen to you.
In most cases facial hair on women isn’t something to be worried about. But, if that hair growth is accompanied with other unusual symptoms like missed periods, heavy bleeding and infertility, you need to go for a checkup to see what’s up.
Hirsutism of this kind can be a sign of conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Cushing Syndrome. These are cases of hormonal imbalance, which leads to increased growth of visibly thick strands of hair.
There are a few ways to manage this type of stubborn hair growth.
Shaving
This is a cost-effective way of getting rid of the hairs. It’s also a good short term solution because there is less scarring on the skin after you shave. The problem with this is that hair grows really fast so you might have to shave once or twice a week. You should also shave with the grain to prevent bumps.
Tweezing
This is also a cost-effective way but it’s definitely not the best. There is lot of scarring that can happen since you’re constantly pulling the hairs from the root. Hair will take a longer time to grow back as compared to shaving but it’s not always recommended.
Waxing
It’s painful but it works as a short-term treatment. The hair also doesn’t grow back quickly as in the case of shaving. However, there could be some scarring.
Medication
A doctor can prescribe medication to control hormonal imbalance. They suppress the male hormones to stop excess hair growth. There are also medicated face creams that prevent hair growth for a while.
Laser hair removal
This will require a number of sessions to get the job done. It’s a permanent solution because the beams kill the follicles to stop hair growth. If you choose this option, you have to make sure you get the procedure done at a reputable clinic to avoid complications.
