Everyone is worried at the moment about their collective wellbeing. The case is likely extreme for those who are pregnant as they have to endure a lot of emotional and wellbeing uncertainties.

The best thing that you can do now if you are pregnant is to keep up with news and hospital guidelines as you try and remain positive. Stress and negativity are not good for a pregnant woman.

Many women are feeling panicky by the uncertainty surrounding having a baby at this moment. To try and help those expecting newborns, through her YouTube channel – Ordinary Folks – KTN’s  Chepchumba Cherus shares some key tips on how to prepare for a newborn during the coronavirus pandemic.

1. Acquaint yourselves with the necessary skills of giving birth

If you stay with your partner, you need to ensure they at least know the basic necessary skills of giving birth. Well, the government already rolled out a medical emergency service for those with pregnancy related emergencies.

However, acquainting yourselves, you and the people around you, with basic delivery skills would help keep you and your unborn child safe as you, say, wait for the emergency medical assistance to arrive.

2. Have a budget

With the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, you need to ensure you are ready and capable of taking care of your baby in the prevailing conditions.

Babies are quite expensive in terms of attending to their needs and keeping them healthy. A good way to go is to start saving as much as you can even before the baby arrives.

Also, ensure you have an active medical insurance cover that will cushion you from the hefty hospital bills.

3. Do simple workouts

Now that you are at home 24/7, the temptation to eat and eat and eat is way stronger, no doubt, but you have to remember that you need to stay fit.  

Working out during pregnancy will help you bounce back to your usual self after the pregnancy. You can do simple exercises such as walking or going up and down your staircase.

You can also do squats and other simple exercises in the house that involve the stretching of your limps. Keeping fit helps you remain physically healthy in the lead up to your delivery.

4. Maintain a nutritional diet

Ensure you stick to healthy eating. Go for foods that boost both you and your baby’s health. During pregnancy, your body needs extra nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

If you eat a diet lacking in key nutrients, this may negatively impact the development of your baby. During this period, you should it what your body wants, not what you want.

5. Take your supplements devotedly

As a mother-to-be, you need to nourish both yourself and your growing baby. During pregnancy, your nutrients needs grow significantly. The vitamin and mineral supplements helps you meet this growing demand.

The supplements are also for you as the mother. In Cherus’ case, she admits to backsliding on her calcium supplement intake during her third trimester and she ended up with dental problems. According to her, she got deprived of calcium as the baby took all that was available leaving her vulnerable.

6. Stay at home!

You need to keep yourself healthy and leaving the house exposes you and increases your probability of contracting the virus.

If you need some shopping, you can prepare shopping list and have your partner or a friend get them for you.
