Bhasha Mukherjee who was crowned Miss England in December last year, has put a pause on all the pageant duties she was doing to work as doctor in the United Kingdom (UK) during this period of the coronavirus pandemic.
The 24-year-old had been training as junior doctor specializing in respiratory medicine before auditioning for the Miss World pageant. Her initial plan had been take a break from medicine and travel all over the world performing humanitarian duties as per her pageant roles.
Mukherjee had been in India for a four-week ambassadorship before the case worsened in UK prompting her to travel back so that she could assist wherever she could.
Mukherjee, who moved to the English city of Derby from Kolkata at the age of 9, said: “There's no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need.”
The pandemic has tuned her decision to pause medical work around to volunteer as a medic during the coronavirus outbreak.
Talking to CNN, the beauty queen said she wanted to head straight home and to work but first she has to isolate for 14 days before embarking on the task.
“I felt a sense of, this is what I’d got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now.
"It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help." Mukherjee added.
So far, UK has over sixty thousand confirmed COVID-19 cases and a death toll of six thousand has been recorded.
