In most cases, you will get advice to drink more water every day. You will hear how important it is to drink enough for clear skin and for our general health, which can cause people to obsess about how much water they’re drinking.

Over hydration is a problem that isn’t quickly noticed because many people don’t actually know that it’s possible to drink too much water and that you could fall severely ill.

Drinking too much water is just as risky as not drinking enough and these are some of the signs that you might be over hydrating your body:

Nausea

When we feel nauseated, one of the first things we reach for is a bottle of water. However, in this situation, it’s more damaging to add more water into your system when the nausea you’re feeling is actually from over hydrating.

Drinking too much water can cause an electrolyte imbalance in your body and overwork your kidneys. This can trigger nausea and vomiting as a result of these imbalances.

Headaches

The cause of a headache is often hard to figure out. It can occur if you’ve not been sleeping properly, if you’ve been stressed out lately and it can also be a symptom of something that’s going on internally like water intoxication.

When you have too much water in your system, the sodium levels aren’t where they should be. This can cause you to have headaches so if you’ve been drinking too much water, you should reduce for the headaches to subside.

Fatigue

Over hydration can make you feel tired even when you’re getting enough sleep every day and aren’t too active during the day. You will feel lethargic and even experience muscle weakness and cramping.

This happens because the electrolytes in your body aren’t properly balanced. And your kidneys are overworking themselves while they try to get rid of the excess amount of water which can make you feel exhausted. 

Too many bathroom visits

It’s normal to have a couple of bathroom visits daily. But, if you notice that you’re constantly rushing to pee all the time, it’s a sign that you need to slow down on your water intake.

You can also tell that you’re going overboard if you constantly have to wake up at night to go pee. If your bathroom visits are disrupting your day, you should probably reduce the amount of water you’re drinking.

Lack of concentration

Water intoxication can literally make you feel like you’re drunk. You will have a hard time concentrating on your daily tasks and you can even experience disorientation and confusion.

This is a sign that your brain function has been disrupted and this can be dangerous if you don’t reduce the amount of water you’re drinking.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to drink liters of water every day. Just drink the amount that is right for your body specifically.
