Most people forget that seeds are nutritional powerhouses and end up omitting them from their diets. These seeds include chia seeds, which are not as common as cumin seeds.

Chia seeds can be described as small oval seeds with a smooth texture. Their colour can vary from white to dark brown, depending on the variety.

These seeds come in two main varieties, which are distinguished by their colour: white and black. The white ones have a milder flavour, while the black ones have a nuttier taste.

Botanically, chia seeds are known as Salvia hispanica and belong to the mint family. They are native to Central and South America.

Despite their tiny size, the seeds are packed with nutrients. They are full of fibre, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, including calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

The fibre aids digestion and improves gut health. The fatty acids improve cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease.
