A cold is one of the most common infections that often goes away without any medical attention.

We all know of the flu season where almost everyone in your class or office is sneezing or experiencing a running nose.

Personally, a cold is one of those infections that make me so weak. All I want to do when I have a cold is sleep all day long and not leave the house.

But you have to be careful with how you treat a cold. You should not expose yourself to too much heat as tempting as it is because it can lead to a fever.

It is important to note that not all colds are caused by the flu season. Some are caused by allergies ranging from pollen, dust while doing some cleaning, extreme weather changes or very strong scents. If you have very severe allergies, daily prescription medications may help manage the symptoms.

Either way, having a runny nose is one of the most uncomfortable feelings especially during this time there is Covid-19 which mimics the signs and symptoms of the common cold.

During this period, it’s advisable for you to get a Covid-19 test before concluding you are just suffering from the common cold.

Until then, here are foods that can help get rid of that annoying runny nose.

Chicken soup

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book when it comes to common colds remedy. You can have this homemade or order a couple of bowls from your favorite restaurant and store in the fridge. It is a great source of vitamins, proteins and minerals which your immune systems needs to fight the cold

Broths

This is similar to chicken soup but you can make it using your favorite vegetable or meat. It is a great source of hydration and also contains nutrients that your body needs to remain strong and heathy. It’s a good supplement especially if you have lost your appetite or you’re having a stomach upset during this period.

Garlic

It is a rich source of flavor and has a wide range of health benefits. It has demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal properties which are good for your body. You can add garlic to your broth or chicken soup and enjoy its rich flavor and healing properties.

Coconut water

Coconut is rich in flavor and nutrients. Some of us don’t know what to do with the coconut water once we cut it open. You can use it to make a couple of dishes and also can be consumed directly by those who enjoy its taste. It contains glucose which is converted to energy and has electrolytes which are needed for hydration.

Hot tea

Now this sounds easy and the best part is, it’s readily available. When you have a cold it’s the best time to take as much tea as you want without judgement. Adding honey instead of sugar is actually a good way of adding nutrients to your favorite tea.

Honey

You can add it to your tea, hot water, use it as a bread spread or just consume it directly. Honey contains antibacterial properties which are important for your body and it stimulates your immune system.

Ginger

Good old ginger. You can add it to your broth or chicken soup or make some ginger tea. It is best known for its anti-nausea properties but it has also shown some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which help ease a running nose.
