The royal spat over who scrubbed Meghan Markle's name off baby Archie's birth certificate was given a fresh twist after reports that it was her own staff who were responsible.

It emerged this week that 'Rachel Meghan', her first and middle names, were removed from her son's certificate a month after giving birth.

In its place, the document listed Archie's mum as the more formal 'Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex.'

A spokesperson for the Sussexes has denied Meghan was behind the change, and in a statement to the Independent said: "The change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by The Palace, as confirmed by documents from senior Palace officials.

"This was not requested by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex nor by The Duke of Sussex."

Now, The Sun reports that a royal source has claimed the certificate was amended by her own staff and not Buckingham Palace.

The paper reports that Royal insiders said Buckingham Palace was not involved and that it was Kensington Palace officials.

A royal source is reported to have said: "The birth certificate was changed by the former office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex they had when they were working members of the royal family.

"It was changed to ensure consistency of the name and title of the Duchess with other private documents."

The Sun had earlier claimed the amendment could have been a 'snub' to Prince William and Kate Middleton, who included Kate's names on their children's certificates.

But a spokesperson added that the claim of a potential “snub” would be “laughable were it not offensive.”

Archie was born on May 6, 2019, and his birth was registered 11 days later before an amendment was made on June 5.

Days after the changes were made, Harry and Meghan walked away from the Fab Four’s joint charity and had quit the Royal family within months.

The three now live in California having removed themselves from royal life.

They have plans for a Spotify podcast series and other commercial ventures that would have been almost impossible to do as members of the royal family.
